What is TEFL, TESOL, ESL, TOFEL?

As it does for all professional environments, the language and acronyms used can be a little unique and daunting, especially as they are often used interchangeably. The list of definitions below should clarify their meanings:

  • EFL - English as a Foreign Language.
  • ELT - English Language Teaching. Mainly used by institutions in the UK.
  • ESL - English as a Second Language
  • ESOL - English for Speakers of other Languages. Mainly used in Australasia
  • TEFL - Teaching English as a Foreign Language - When English is being taught in a country where it is the second language or not the "Mother Tongue."
  • TESL - Teaching English as a Second Language. This is where English is being taught to non-native speakers of English in a country where it is the native language (for example teaching immigrants to the UK/USA).
  • TESOL - Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. This term theoretically encompasses both of the above.

International English Language Testing - IELTS and TOEIC

IELTS - International English Language Testing System. A highly dependable, practical and valid English language assessment primarily used by those seeking international education, professional recognition, bench-marking to international standards and global mobility.

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is jointly managed by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL), British Council and IDP Education Australia: IELTS Australia.

  • University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL) is the world's leading provider of exams for learners of English. Each year the exams are taken by around 1.5 million people, in 135 countries. Please contact ielts@ucles.org.uk for further information.
  • The British Council connects people worldwide with the learning opportunities and creative ideas from the UK and builds lasting relationships between the UK and other countries. The British Council is the UK's international organisation for educational opportunity and cultural relations and is represented in 109 countries worldwide. Please contact ielts@britishcouncil.org for further information.
  • IDP Education Australia is Australia's international education organisation. It undertakes a broad range of activities from student advisory services and educational publications to project consultancy and English language teaching and testing. Please contact ielts@idp.com for further information.

TOEIC - Test of English for International Communication. It measures the everyday English skills of people working in an international environment.

  • Learners find the TOEIC test an excellent means to apply for new positions, to obtain credentials, and to monitor their own improvement in English.
  • Corporations, from small businesses to multinationals, rely on the TOEIC test to document progress in English-training programs, to recruit, promote, and hire employees, and to implement a common standard of measurement across multiple corporate sites.
  • English Programs use the TOEIC test to place students at the appropriate language learning levels, demonstrate their progress, and evaluate program effectiveness.
  • Government organizations and agencies rely on the TOEIC test to document progress in English-training programs, and to recruit, promote, and hire employees.
