We expect to provide information of interest to alumni and those of you who have contacted us in the past, or are currently communicating with us, about our TESOL course here in New Zealand, associated programmes, and/or our upcoming events and activities.

I want to personally thank all trainees who have attended our TESOL Courses here in New Zealand over the past year (Since 2004). You have made Aspire New Zealand and TEFL International New Zealand a great location to study. Even with the growing pains associated with a new school, it has been an enjoyable place to be.   New Staff - Mr. Robb Armstrong - Acting Academic Manager

Robb recently moved to Thames from Auckland and brings with him a wealth of both national and international teaching experience as well as a strong academic background in TESOL, TEFL, ESOL and linguistics.

Robb completed a Bachelor of Education in Montreal, Canada, at Concordia University, one of the few institutions offering a four-year degree programme specialising in TESOL. From there, Robb moved to the warmer climate of Thailand, teaching at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok for one year and Phuket Teachers College for three years, where he trained Thai TEFL / ESL teachers bound for local primary and high schools.

While teaching in Thailand, Robb also completed a Master of Arts Degree in Applied Linguistics through Monash University in Melbourne. After this he moved to the Middle East for a year before returning to New Zealand to take up a position at Auckland University of Technology's International House. From there, Robb moved to Languages International in Auckland, where he again taught ESL / ESOL and also helped develop the school's on-line learning systems.

More recently, Robb has worked as a freelance web designer and developer, and has also been focusing on instructional design and web-based learning delivery systems.

We look forward to working with Robb and welcome his broad range of experience and skills, which we feel will be an asset to us here at Aspire New Zealand as we look to the future.

TESOL Course Class Trip to Rotorua

All study and NO play - NO WAY!

Recently the Principal of Aspire New Zealand, Mr. Christopher Linton, took a group of TEFL International TESOL trainees, enrolled in the Nov/Dec 2005 course, on a trip of a life-time to Rotorua, New Zealand; New Zealand's number one tourist destination.

They left Thames on Saturday morning at 6:30 am arriving in Rotorua at 9 am. They visited a natural spring (pumping 10,000,000 gallons of fresh water from the ground every hour) past a grove of massive redwood trees, went to the Agrodome Farm Show, and went jet-boating (0-100 in 4 sec with 5 g-forces of thrust on the corners). Cheryl - one of our UK/Hong-Kong TESOL Course Trainees had a go on the infamous "SWING." She was labeled the dare-devil of the group! Way to go Cheryl - gutsy!!

After checking into Rotorua's "Spa Lodge Backpacker" accommodation, right in the middle of Rotorua City, the TESOL Trainee group went to the "Gondola" to go lugeing; 5 trips down a narrow concrete path with three degrees of difficulty. With the exception of Mr. Linton bailing on a corner, rolling several times scraping up his arm at high speed, everyone came away exhilarated, challenged and unhurt.

Other events of the trip were the late-night BBQ party at the backpacker, a dip in the natural spa at Spa Lodge Backpacker by moonlight (felt great, really great!), a visit to the Maori Arts and Crafts Centre, experiencing a Maori Concert and the HUKA, a visit to a Geyser and taking in the sights and smells of boiling mud pools, seeing a live kiwi in the purpose built kiwi-house, and visiting the Wai-o-tapu thermal area with brilliantly coloured sulphur springs and lakes as well as spectacular walks.

General comments were of unbelief at New Zealand's unique wonders, which left a positive memory for these that went.

Another group went up the Coromandel Peninsula to Whitianga, Hot-water-beech and then down to Tauranga. Another rented a car and went to Coromandel township. All reported that they had a wonderful experience.
